PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL, HONG KONG JOINS ‘GLOBAL CONNECTIONS CARNIVAL’

23 March 2007 – Consul and Acting Head of Post Victorio Mario M. Dimagiba, Jr. of the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Consulate joined the celebration of the “Global Connections Carnival,” celebrating cultures, festivals and customs of 12 countries from 20 to 22 March 2007 at the Podium of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Poly U).

The 12 participating countries – including the Philippines – represented by their Consulates General in Hong Kong , showcased their respective cultures through dance performances, game demonstrations, product sampling, and food and wine tasting.  They also provided information on their festivals and tourist spots.

The Philippine booth was decorated with images of the jeepney, the vinta, mangoes and silhouettes of coconut trees reminiscent of the Philippines ’ beautiful beaches.  Handmade Philippine handicrafts such as mother-of-pearl candy dishes and jewelry boxes, woven rattan baskets and embroidered placemats were also on display.  Poly U students and other visitors were treated to samples of polvoron, and were delighted with the demonstrations of Philippine games such as sungka and dama.

On the last day of the Carnival, the Overseas Pinoy Theatre performed the Banga dance.

Other attractions of the Carnival included interactive games, arts and crafts workshops.  Special prizes like airline tickets and MP3 players were raffled off for the visitors who went around all featured booths and completed their chop cars.

The Carnival was organized by the Poly U’s Culture Promotion Committee in celebration of its 70th anniversary.  END
