PHILIPPINE EMBASSY, LONDON PARTICIPATES AT UK INTERNATIONAL SPRING FESTIVAL

28 May 2007 — Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom Edgardo B. Espiritu reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Embassy participated at the annual Spring Festival held at the Kensington Town Hall in London on 15 and 16 May 2007.

The Festival was organized by the International Social Service in the United Kingdom (ISS-UK), a voluntary social service organization working across international boundaries, facilitating global exchange of information and access to protection and support services, particularly for children all over the world.

This year's colorful diplomatic event in London featured various products and cuisines from around 80 countries with diplomatic presence in the UK .  The Philippine booth showcased Philippine fashion accessories such as necklaces and brooches made from pearls, corals and coconut shells; embroidered placemats and runners, native bags, capiz items, women’s barong, jewelry boxes, and bottles of calamansi and dalandan juice.

The Embassy also invited Mrs. Merlinda Pryce, a Filipino restaurateur and owner of Mayfair Oriental, to join the food festival.  Mayfair Oriental is a London-based catering service that specializes in Filipino cuisine.  The Philippine food stall offered traditional Filipino cuisine such as chopsuey, pork barbeque, bananacue, turon, chicken adobo, and halo-halo.

Princess Alexandra, patron of ISS-UK, was the special guest at the diplomatic event.  The Princess was presented by Philippine Deputy Chief of Mission Reynaldo Catapang with a coconut-shell necklace in a jusi pouch when the Princess visited the Philippine booth.

Around 5,000 people of different nationalities attended the event, which now celebrates its 48th year.  Proceeds from the event will go to the ISS charity fund, helping displaced children from all over the world.  END
