PHILIPPINES CHAMPIONS DEMOCRACY, ADVOCATES MEASURES BEFORE UN
TO STRENGTHEN NEW OR RESTORED DEMOCRATIC NATIONS

5 November 2007, United Nations, New York - Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto G. Romulo addresses the 62nd United Nations General Assembly and submits specific proposals to promote and consolidate new or restored democracies in the world. Romulo recalled the democratic wave that lifted many nations during the post-Cold War era, and cited the vital role of the Philippines in helping spread democracy around the globe.  To further strengthen the cooperation between the UN and International Conference on New or Restored Democracies (ICNRD), the Foreign Secretary called for global recognition of the importance of migration and development, adoption of the Dept-for-Equity proposal, reconciliation through Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation, and the establishment of a Trust Fund for New or Restored Democracies.
