EXPERTS MEETING ON MIGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN HOLLAND

12 November 2007 – Philippine Ambassador to the Hague Romeo Arguelles received visiting Filipino experts on migration and development who took part in a weeklong series of events under the auspices of Europe-based OFW groups Stichting Habagat, Damayan and Bisdak (Bisayang Daku), with the support of Dutch-based aid agency Oxfam Novib.

Seventeen migrant leaders from the United States, Europe, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines have agreed to form a network to discuss the impact of migration and development policies on the Filipino global diaspora. Ms. Sitti Djalia Turabin, Secretary General of the Moro Human Rights Center and President of Pinay…   Kilos (PINK), presented a situationer on OFW's from Mindanao, with emphasis on the plight of families who are left in certain conflict areas of Sulu and Basilan in Mindanao.

Stichting Habagat, Damayan and Bisdak organized a series of events which included a Fiesta Filipiniana get-together in Rotterdam on 26 October, a two-day Expert's Meeting in Utrecht on 29-30 October, and the one day conference on the theme "Converging Filipino Diaspora Global Initiatives for Sustainable Development" in Amsterdam on 02 November.
