OFW ALBERT BACANI SR. RELEASED BY NIGERIAN ABDUCTORS
10 October 2007 – Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto G. Romulo reported to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the release of OFW Albert Bacani Sr. by his Nigerian abductors. Bacani and his Colombian co-worker were recovered by Nigerian authorities on a bridge in Port Harcourt around 5:00 a.m. today, Manila time (10 p.m., 09 October in Nigeria). They are physically unharmed and now in the custody of their employers at SAIPEM and undergoing full medical and psychological evaluation. The two were abducted on 27 September from their workplace at SAIPEM’s petrochemical complex in Port Harcourt, River State, Nigeria. Secretary Romulo has directed Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria Masaranga Umpa to facilitate the repatriation of Bacani to the country and conveyed the good news to Bacani’s family. Mr. Bacani has spoken by phone to his wife. Secretary Romulo has expressed the profound gratitude of the Philippine Government to the Government of Nigeria, SAIPEM, and the Philippine Embassy in Abuja for their successful efforts in securing the release of Bacani.
