25 October 2007 – A wreathlaying ceremony
was held at the shrine of General Carlos P. Romulo, Philippine Signatory
to the UN Charter, at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio on 24
October 2007, as one of the week-long activities of the Department of
Foreign Affairs in celebration of the 62nd Founding Anniversary
of the United Nations.
Present during the event were Foreign
Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo, Ms. Nileema Noble, UN Resident
Coordinator, Judge Aurora Navarrete-Reciņa, President of the United
Nations Association of the Philippines (UNAP), members of the diplomatic
corps, DFA officers and staff, UN officials and staff, and other
distinguished guests.
Secretary Romulo and Ms. Noble delivered
their messages on the relevance of the United Nations in these times of
major global challenges.
The Secretary reaffirmed the Philippines
full support to the United Nations in achieving the Millennium Development
Goals by the year 2015. He enjoined everybody’s cooperation in the
eradication of hunger and poverty, the attainment of a universal primary
education, promotion of gender equality, and the reduction of child
mortality.
Secretary Romulo paid tribute to the late
General Carlos P. Romulo who embodied the commitment of the nation to the
ideals and aspirations of the UN. The Secretary remarked, “As one of the
founding fathers of the UN, General Romulo reposed immense faith in the
capability of the UN to help meet the world’s aspirations for peace and
development.” The Secretary also honored the memory of the men and women
of the United Nations for their foresight in establishing an organization
that seeks to forge a stable and secure international system, that aims to
reflect the universal moral conscience of humankind, and that provides the
indispensable forum for nations to come together in the search for peace
and progress for all humanity. END |
