PHILIPPINE CONSULATE GENERAL IN CHICAGO PARTICIPATES IN THE COMMEMORATION OF UN DAY 31 October 2007—The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Post participated in the commemoration of United Nations Day in Chicago on 24 October 2007. The event was organized by the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes with the theme “Global Health: A Critical Component to Development”. It highlights the challenges faced by the United Nations to halt and reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and other major diseases by 2015.
The Consulate set up a cultural, tourism display and information table. On display were posters and printed materials on the country’s program to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. Colorful and attractive pamphlets and brochures about the Philippines were made available to the public. Consul General Cabrera joined the members of the Consular Corps and several Illinois health organizations in a program during the day. In her brief remarks, the Consul General highlighted the Philippines’ program to combat the spread of the disease and the need for the United Nations member countries to join hands in fighting the spread of the disease. The Governor of the State of Illinois proclaimed October 24, 2007 as UNITED NATIONS DAY in Illinois and encouraged all citizens to join in all activities related to the commemoration. The Proclamation also stated that the United Nations is partnering with member governments and volunteer organizations to help address the global crisis of HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases. As part of this endeavor, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA’s) HERO campaign provides comprehensive, school-based support to orphans and vulnerable children living in HIV/AIDS-affected communities in Africa.
