11 September 2007 – Philippine Ambassador to Havana George B. Reyes inaugurated the first Philippine honorary consulate in Jamaica on 08 September 2007 with businessman-lawyer Everoy Hugo Chin as honorary consul.  The honorary consulate is centrally located in the Red Hills district of Kingston.

At the simple opening ceremony attended by Jamaican officials and members of the Filipino community, Ambassador Reyes thanked the host government for authorizing the establishment of the honorary consulate as well as Mr. Chin for accepting the nomination.

Ambassador Reyes also announced that the well-furbished premises would also be used to showcase Philippine exports and tourism offerings.

He advised the Filipino community to work closely with the honorary consul-designate and to consider the establishment of the honorary consulate as a manifestation of the Philippine government’s continuing commitment to the protection and promotion of the interests of overseas Filipinos.

Mr. Chin said it was an honor for him to accept the nomination and vowed that he would exert his best efforts not only to protect the interests of the Philippines in Jamaica but also to contribute to the strengthening of RP-Jamaican ties.

The honorary consul-designate has been assisting Filpinos since the mid-1990s and has been granted a provisional authority to act as consul ad honorem by the Jamaican government.  END.
