STREET IN XIAMEN NAMED AFTER SISTER-CITY CEBU

 

 DFA Undersecretary Benedicto and Consul General Lee-Pineda applaud as Cebu Mayor Osmeña unveils marker for “ Cebu Street ” or “Su Wu Lu” in Xiamen City  

     

 

17 September 2007 – Philippine Consul General to Xiamen Emelinda Lee Pineda accompanied a 15-member delegation from Cebu on 09 September 2007 to a street-naming ceremony in honor of seven select sister-cities of Xiamen .  The Cebu delegation was headed by DFA Undersecretary Francisco L. Benedicto and Cebu Mayor Tomas R. Osmeña.  Cebu Street ” or “Su Wu Lu” is located at Wuyuan Bay Area, which is being developed into an economic and commercial center by the sea.  

The street-naming ceremony was organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of Xiamen Municipal People’s Government.  Gracing the event and coming all the way to Xiamen from Beijing was Mr. Li Jian Ping, Vice President of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.  In appreciation of the honor bestowed on Cebu City and to reciprocate the gesture, Undersecretary Benedicto announced the plan of the Cebu City Council to likewise name a street after Xiamen City in Cebu .  

The event, which coincided with the 11th China International Fair for Investment and Trade held in Xiamen from 08 to 11 September, was a major part of the activities attended by the delegation.  Mayor Osmeña also presented a short introduction and briefing on the tourism and business opportunities in Cebu during the 5th Cooperation for International Friendship Cities of China attended by delegations from Sasebo, Japan; Wellington, New Zealand; Penang, Malaysia; Maroochy Shire, Australia; Surabaya, Indonesia; and Mokpo, South Korea.  END
