THREE FILIPINOS CAPPED TRAINING IN CAMBODIA  

18 September 2007 – The Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh informed the Department that three (3) Filipinos obtained a degree of Bachelor of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics from the Cambodian School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (CSPO). Coming from both the military and civilian sectors, Ms. Amelyn Flores, Mr. Artemio Ibana Jr., and Mr. Nestor Daba initiated their studies in 2004, and received Category 2 Certification from the International Society of Prosthetists and Orthotists, as professionals in the aforementioned field. The training equips the graduates quality rehabilitation services to disabled persons, and subsequently, bring back their dignity and value. Ms. Mary Scott, Country Director of Cambodia Trust, in charge of CSPO operations, spoke highly of the Philippine graduates and was labeled as strong, very hard working, in  possession of excellent standards, and meritorious. Prosthetics/Orthotics is a professional field that deals with the construction and custom fitting of prosthesis (legs, arms, and hooks to replace hands) and orthjoses (medical supports like corsets and splints for those afflicted with polio).  

The graduation speaker was H.E. Ung Tea Seam, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Social Services, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation. He urged the graduates to apply the knowledge and skills acquired, as well as improve the lives of the people in their own region.  

CSPO was established in 1994, with the collaboration and assistance of the Royal Government of Cambodia, Cambodia Trust, Handicap International, Veterans International, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). CSPO is currently lodged at Calmette Hospital , generously supported by the Nippon Foundation, the British Government, US Agency for International Development and ICRC. CSPO has produced 122 graduates since its establishment. It is linked with Australia ’s La Trobe University,Tanzania’s Tumain University , and high quality learning institutes. Cambodia offers one of the highest standards of prosthetic and orthotic services in Southeast Asia . END.
