MALAYSIAN CABLE TELEVISION NETWORK FEATURES PHILIPPINE MARTIAL ARTS

25 September 2007 – The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that Astro All Asia Networks Pic. (ASTRO), a cable satellite television network in Malaysia, featured the “Arnis de Mano”, a form of Philippine martial arts, in an episode of its show entitled, E-HA, which is shown in ASTRO’s Channel 19. The 30-minute episode was featured on 11 August 2007 in three time slots at 1400 Hrs., 1750 Hrs., and 2200 Hrs. The episode was replayed for five (5) days on 12, 14, 16, 17, and 18 August 2007.

The 30-minute show featured the Chinese wushu, the Japanese kendo, and the Philippine arnis de mano. Hosted by Malaysian actress Lu Ser Yee, the show featured three (3) martial arts instructors, including Filipino martial artist Robin Marohombsar Adiong of the World Martial Arts Center (WMAC), a gym in Kuala Lumpur that specializes in multi-discipline martial arts programs, as well as health/wellness and leisure activities. Mr. Adiong demonstrated the techniques of arnis de mano for the program.

Mr. Adiong, a structural engineer by profession, stated that after his demonstration of arnis de mano on television, many Malaysians and foreigners living in Kuala Lumpur have expressed interest in learning more about this form of Philippine martial arts. There has been an increase of enrollees, both adults and children, in his class at WMAC.

Mr. Adiong, who hails from Marawi City in the Philippines, holds a 6th dan black belt in karate and a 2nd dan in aikido. He teaches arnis de mano at WMAC on weekends. He is also a volunteer resource speaker at the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC), a skills training center for Overseas Filipino Workers under the Office of the Labor Attache’ of the Embassy. In Manila, Mr. Adiong co-founded the Shotokan Karate-do Club, a member of the Karate Federation of the Philippines. He received his training on shokotan from the Japan Karate Association in Tokyo in 1973. END.
