FILIPINO ROWERS SHINE IN DRAGON BOAT COMPETITION IN SYDNEY

26 September 2007 – A group of Filipino rowers competed in the 2007 International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) World Dragon Boat Racing Championships held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in the city of Penrith , which is located in the western Sydney area.

In her report to the Department of Foreign Affairs, Philippine Consul General Maria Theresa Lazaro noted that the Filipino rowers won in the following races:

First Place in the Premier Open Race for 200 meters;

Second Place in the Premier Open for 500 meters; and

Third Place in the Premier Open Race for 1,000 meters.

Consul General Lazaro cheered and congratulated the winning Filipino athletes saying that “The Filipino dragon boat team’s notable performance in this year’s championships is a welcome opportunity for us to prove that Filipino can excel and become a world-class competitor if given the right support, training and international exposure.  I congratulate and wish Team Philippines all the success in their future competitions, wherever they may be.”

The IDBF) Racing Championships, now in its eighth year, was held from 20 to 23 September 2007 and was participated in by sixteen other countries and territories, namely Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Taipei, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, the Philippines, Russia, Slovak Republic, and the United States.

The city of Penrith is located at the foot of the famous Blue Mountains region and is 50 kilometers, or a 45-minute drive, west of Sydney .  The city was the venue of the regatta competitions during the 2000 Sydney Olympics.  END
