September 2007 – Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Jose P. Del Rosario,
Jr. led Embassy personnel in a consular outreach mission held in
Aqaba
,
Jordan
, a bustling port city and industrial zone south of the capital
Amman
. The consular outreach mission, which was held at the Aquamarina IV Hotel
in Aqaba from 14 to 16 September 2007, was able to renew eight (8)
passports and register fifty (50) Filipino workers, many of whom work in
hotels or malls in Aqaba, while the Philippine Overseas Labor Office
(POLO) also issued two (2) Overseas Employment Certificates (OECs) and
processed four (4) voluntary applications for OWWA membership.
Ambassador
Del Rosario also engaged the Filipino community in a dialogue during an
open forum where he personally assured the audience that the Embassy is
fully committed toward assisting them with whatever problems they
encounter while working in
Jordan
. "A major reason why the
Embassy in
Amman
was reopened after several years is for the Philippine government to
secure better the well-being and protection of Filipino workers in
Jordan
," the
Ambassador
stated during his remarks.
Noting
that there is now a sizeable Filipino community in Aqaba, the Ambassador
also encouraged
them to be more proactive and organize themselves into an association that
would provide mutual help and assistance for members.
Ambassador Del Rosario pointed to the growing number of Filipino
community organizations in
Amman
and highlighted how these organizations had been interacting very
effectively with the Embassy in their projects.
He further emphasized that Filipino organizations in Aqaba could
serve as important focal points for the Embassy's interaction with the
Filipino community here.
The
Philippine Embassy in
Amman
visits the Filipino community in Aqaba once a year to deliver various
consular services to Filipino workers in this port city.
Most of the Filipinos based in Aqaba find it difficult to make the
trip to Amman due to the fact that they only have one rest day every week.
