PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN OTTAWA CONDUCTS ORIENTATION SEMINAR FOR MIGRANT WORKERS IN MONTREAL

16 April 2008 – The Philippine Embassy in Ottawa participated in conducting an “Orientation and Information Seminar for Filipino Migrant Workers” held in Montreal, Quebec on 06 April.  Ambassador Jose S. Brillantes, Minister and Consul General Joseph Gerard B. Angeles, and Second Secretary and Consul Rhenita B. Rodriguez comprised the team from the Embassy that conducted the seminar organized by the Filipino Caregivers Association of Montreal (FCAM), in collaboration with various Filipino community organizations in Quebec.

The Embassy discussed the Embassy’s consular services, such as passports and notarials, as well as dual citizenship, overseas absentee voting and the Ambassadors’, Consuls’ General and Tourism Directors’ Tour of the Philippines with some 100 participants.  The seminar was aimed at imparting knowledge to caregivers and other workers who recently arrived in Canada and making them aware of their rights and responsibilities, as well as laws and regulations affecting them.  The seminar also apprised them of various services available to them in Canada through Canadian government agencies.

Among the resource persons invited by the FCAM to speak at the seminar were Mr. Walter Tom, a Canadian immigration lawyer specializing on family sponsorship and human rights; Mr. Jose Calugay of the Centre for Philippine Concerns based in Montreal, Quebec, who spoke on immigration matters; Ms. Tess Tessalona of the Immigrant Workers’ Centre in Montreal; Mr. Ariel Tan of Union Bank-Saratoga Electronics and Money Remittance; and Ms. Lilia Esguerra who spoke on entrepreneurship and career development.

Ambassador Brillantes, Minister and Consul General Angeles, and Second Secretary and Consul Rodriguez fielded questions on the Embassy’s services as well as dual citizenship and overseas absentee voting from the participants after the presentations.  Certificates of attendance were distributed to the participants at the end of the seminar.

The Embassy’s participation in the seminar is an extension of its Orientation-Seminar Para sa Manggagawang Pilipino, which it has been conducting for newly-arrived Filipino workers in major cities in Canada, primarily aimed as a briefing for new arrivals to Canada. END
