PHILIPPINE EMBASSY MEXICO PARTICIPATES IN

“MIRRA: LA CHINA POBLANA?”

25 April 2008 – Philippine Ambassador to Mexico Antonio M. Lagdameo reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Philippine Embassy is participating in an exhibition entitled “Mirra: La China Poblana?” at the Museum of Popular Art of the Autonomous Popular University of the State of Puebla in Mexico from 16 April to 24 August 2008.  The exhibit aims to showcase the cultural exchange that took place between Mexico and Asia during the colonial period through the Manila Galleon Trade.

The exhibit is composed of 44 collections of art from the 17th to the 19th century, some of which came from the Philippines, lent to the museum by private collectors and eight museums in Mexico, including the National Museum of History, National Museum of Vice Royalty Art, History Museum of Acapulco, and the Fort San Diego Historical Museum of Acapulco.

Aside from the colonial art pieces, two interconnecting showrooms displayed photographs of Philippine colonial churches and Filipiniana costumes lent by the Embassy.

In extemporaneous remarks before the ribbon cutting ceremony, Ambassador Lagdameo said that the Philippine presence in the exhibit would contribute to the promotion and strengthening of relations between the people of Mexico and the Philippines. END
