INDUCTION OF NEW BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE FILIPINO VETERANS ASSOCIATION IN AGANA, GUAM

06 February 2008 – Philippine Consul General to Guam Bayani S. Mercado (extreme right, 1st photo) swears in the new members of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Scouts and World War II Veterans’ Association-Guam Chapter after the Philippine Consulate sponsored the showing of the documentary “A Moral Debt: The Post-War Battle of the Veteranos” on 3 February 2008.  The short film aims to rally support for the passage of the Filipino Veterans Equity Bill.

Consul General Mercado updated the veterans on the recent passage of HR 760 in the US House of Representatives’ Veterans Committee and on the efforts of the Philippine Government to lobby and campaign for the adoption of S.1315 in the US Senate, including the contracting of a consultant to assist the Philippine Government in lobbying for the passage of these bills.  He also encouraged the veterans and their families to request their friends and other family members in the mainland to write or call their respective senators and lobby for their support of HR 760 and S.1315.

Senator James Espaldon (R-Tamuning) of the 29th Guam Legislature (6th from right beside ConGen Mercado) also graced the occasion.  Sen. Espaldon, a Filipino-Guamanian, has recently been appointed as Chair of the Guam Senate’s Committee on Tourism, Maritime, Military, Veterans and Foreign Affairs.

Joining the group is Mayor Melissa Sabares (seated, 2nd from right) of Dededo, who is Filipino-Chamorro and Acting FCG President James Robinson (extreme right).  The Filipino veterans hold their regular monthly meeting at the Seniors’ Center of Dededo. END
