FILIPINOS WIN FIRST PRIZE IN THE 21ST INTERNATIONAL ICE CARVING COMPETITION DURING THE WINTERLUDE FESTIVAL IN OTTAWA |

06 February 2008 - Philippine Ambassador to Canada Jose S. Brillantes reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that Armando Baisas, Ottawa-based Filipino chef, and Ross Baisas of Montreal, Quebec, garnered 1st Place for the sculpture entitled, “Tunggalian” in the pairs category of the “Casino du Lac-Leamy Crystal Garden 21st International Ice-Carving” competition, held at the Confederation Park in Ottawa that kicked off on 01 February. The team’s “Tunggalian” (The Encounter) ice carving also earned the “People’s Choice (or Public’s Choice) award, besting 24 other participants in the pairs category. The ice carving was completed in 30 hours, non-stopped from 1st February till noontime of 3rd February. It depicts Filipino hero, Lapu-Lapu, in fierce fight with the Spanish conqueror, Magellan. Winterlude is an annual winter festival in Ottawa and Gatineau. It is a very large event of outdoor activities including public skating, skating displays, snow and ice sculpture competitions, musical concerts at the “Winterlude Snowbowl,” children’s play areas, an ice lounge and numerous off–site events. It is run by Canada’s National Capital Commission and was started in 1979. It is one of Ottawa’s most important tourist draws, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. In 2007, it set a new attendance record of an estimated 1.6 million visitors. |
