FILIPINO CULTURAL HERITAGE SHOWCASED IN THE

SMALL WORLD EVENT IN NIGERIA

15 February 2008 - The Philippines, represented by members of the Filipino Community in Lagos, the Philippine Barangay Society (PBS), successfully showcased the rich cultural heritage of the country during the SMALL WORLD Cultural Presentation on 09 February at the British International School in Lagos.

SMALL WORLD is an annual event involving many organizations from various countries with the purpose of contributing charitable projects and proceeds to the Nigerian communities through the staging of dance, song and other cultural features of each member country and through the solicitations from big business corporations.  PBS specifically spearheads the Kirikiri Initiative, a civic project for the less fortunate of Nigeria. Led by its President, Engr. Esper Derpo, PBS presented the Filipino cultural dance “Banga” which was well-applauded and recognized for its synchronization, colorful costume and artistry. A total of 18 countries participated in the presentation, although more than 30 countries had joined in the display of food and other items in individual booths.

A backdrop for the Philippine booth, the Banaue Rice Terraces was highlighted as the 8th Wonder of the World.

A big turnout of the expatriate community witnessed the event and included the presence of members of the Diplomatic Corps, headed by the Dean, Philippine Ambassador Masaranga R. Umpa and the Syrian Ambassador. END
