Philippine Embassy, pretoria conducts diplomatic &

consular mission in namibia

26 February 2008 — Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that he led a diplomatic and consular mission to Windhoek, Namibia from 14 to 17 February 2008, following-up official matters with the Namibian Foreign Ministry as well as to provide services and assistance to Filipinos there, including those working in Namibia’s biggest garment factory.  The Philippine Embassy in Pretoria has concurrent jurisdiction over Namibia. 

Ambassador Reyes and Consul General Villapando likewise met with Hon. Ulitala M. Hiveluah, Permanent Secretary of the Namibian Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, to discuss the working conditions of Filipinos working in Namibia.  The Ambassador took the opportunity of the meeting with Permanent Secretary Hiveluah to submit a draft bilateral labor agreement for the Ministry’s consideration. 

While in Namibia, Ambassador Reyes attended the Annual Reception for Ambassasdors given by Namibian President Hifikepunye Pohamba.  The Ambassador had bilateral meetings with Namibian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Veiccoh Knghiweta and officials from other agencies.  He took the occasion to follow-up the Philippines’ request for support for the candidature of Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago to the International Court of Justice.  END
