09 January 2008 – Philippine Ambassador to Germany Delia Domingo-Albert reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that Atty. Manuel P. Ladrido, City Administrator of Calamba, Laguna, called on her recently to discuss the proposed twinning partnership between Calamba, birthplace of Dr. Jose Rizal, the national hero and Wilhelmsfeld, Baden-Wuettemberg, Germany where Rizal stayed in 1886 to work on his first novel, “Noli Me Tangere”.

The proposed partnership is a component of the Embassy’s cultural diplomacy project entitled “Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s Life and Works:  A Catalyst for Promoting Philippine-German Relations in the 21st Century”.

Atty. Ladrido discussed the modalities and formalities of the proposed partnership which is targeted to be accomplished by the first quarter of 2008 to coincide with the commemoration of the 7th Anniversary of the establishment of the City of Calamba.   The partnership is envisioned to pursue a program of cooperation that will strengthen bilateral relations between the Philippines and Germany.

In Germany, Rizal lived in Wilhelmsfeld while studying at the Eye Clinic of the Heidelberg University.  Later, he moved to Berlin where he lived until 1886.  END
