PHILIPPINES WINS 2008 WOMEN'S WORLD CUP OF GOLF IN GARY PLAYER GOLF COURSE, SUN CITY, SOUTH AFRICA

22 January 2008 - Philippine Ambassador to South Africa Virgilio A. Reyes, Jr. reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that the Philippine Golf team composed of Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin won the fourth edition of the 2008 Women's World Cup of Golf held in Sun City, South Africa on Sunday, 20 January 2008, with an exciting finish culminated with birdies at each of the last five holes.
Ambassador Reyes personally congratulated the duo for giving honors to the Philippines and becoming the new Philippine Ambassadors of Goodwill in the field of golf. The competition ran from 18 to 20 January 2008 and was played at the 6,466-yards, par-72 golf course. The Philippine Embassy and the Filipino Communities provided moral support for the Filipino players during the competition.
Playing in the prestigious Gary Player Golf Course in South Africa, Rosales and Delasin scored in the final round seven-under-par 65 in the best ball (each team member playing their own ball with the best score on each hole counting), beating South Korea Team- who had been comfortably in the lead after nine holes- by two strokes. Defending champions Julieta Granada and Celeste Troche from Paraguay finished ninth place, a stroke behind hosts South Africa (Ashleigh Simon and Laurette Maritz).
Ms Delasin, in a media interview said, "This win was all about the teamwork and the team spirit Jennifer and I enjoyed over the three days and it's a win we want to dedicate to the people of the Philippines." Mesdames Delasin and Rosales reportedly shared a prize of US$280, 000 for first place.
Commissioner Carolyn E. Bivens of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, in a message, stated that 2008 Women’s World Cup is aimed to promote team unity for the top players from around the world. Women’s World Cup in Golf CEO, Tania Fourie, who is responsible for bringing the event to South Africa, has likewise announced the creation of another initiative, “Project Golf 2014” setting their sights on making sure that by 2014 South Africa will see two thousand and fourteen junior girl golfers taking to the fairways with registered handicaps.
