MARCH 4, 2008 GENEVA, SWITZERLAND—Secretary Alberto G. Romulo delivers the Philippine national statement at the High Level Segment of the Seventh Session of the Human Rights Council at the United Nations in Geneva. Secretary Romulo stressed the Human Rights Council is the most important forum for global efforts to protect, promote and uphold human rights. Recalling the Philippine role in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year, Secretary Romulo called on the international community to further strengthen the Human Rights Council. To address the impact of globalization on the human person, furthermore, the Secretary invited countries to participate in the Second Global Forum on Migration and Development which the Philippines will host this October. Secretary Romulo also thanked the international community for its continued trust and confidence in the Philippines as a global partner for human rights protection. The Philippines was re-elected in 2007 to its second term in the Human Rights Council.
