PHILIPPINE EMBASSY IN KUALA LUMPUR MEETS FILCOM LEADERS

28 March 2008—Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Victoriano M. Lecaros led officials of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur in meeting leaders of the Filipino community (FilCom) and representatives of various Filipino associations in Malaysia at the Embassy on 16 March at 3:00 pm.  It was the first general meeting between the Embassy and the FilCom for this year. Thirty-two (32) Filipinos representing twenty-four (24) Filipino associations attended the meeting, including two (2) FilCom leaders who came from the State of Johor, about 4 hours away from Kuala Lumpur, and Kuantan, State of Pahang, which is about 3 hours away from Kuala Lumpur, respectively.

The general meeting was aimed at, among others, discussing joint activities to be organized by the Embassy and the FilCom in celebration of the 110th Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence on 12 June.  In his message to the FilCom leaders, Ambassador Lecaros (inset) underscored the significance of remembering this important event in our nation’s history, especially its impact on the everyday lives of Filipinos.

Consul Anne J. Louis presented and discussed with the FilCom leaders the Embassy’s proposed activities for this year’s Independence Day celebrations, including a “Filipino Mass” at St. John’s Cathedral on 08 June, to be followed by a “Filipino Fiesta” at the Embassy premises. Each association will be allocated a booth where they can feature various Filipino delicacies and products.

Second Secretary Theodore I. Libardo also discussed the Kalayaan Cup, a Golf Tournament, which will be held on 11 June.

Vice Consul Marford M. Angeles informed the FilCom leaders about a Filipino Art Exhibit to be officially launched on 12 June. He encouraged the FilCom members to support the exhibit, which will be held at the Galeri Seni Lukis in Kuala Lumpur.

The Embassy officials also took the opportunity presented by the meeting to disseminate information and to warn the FilCom against employment scams and illegal recruiters. Atty. Josephus B. Jimenez, Philippine Labor Attaché to Malaysia, and Attaché Gangco Punginaguina, warned the FilCom of internet employment scams targeting Filipinos seeking job opportunities in Malaysia. They both reiterated the Embassy’s advise to Filipinos to pursue work in Malaysia only through legitimate recruitment agencies. The FilCom representatives were urged to be vigilant and cautious of e-mails promising high-paying jobs in Malaysia and asking applicants to send money for processing of work permits and other documents. Perpetrators of these scams only want to extract money from people.

After the meeting, a simple ribbon cutting ceremony was held to inaugurate the newly asphalted Embassy grounds, a project made possible by BML Nouveaux Visages, a Philippine company based in Malaysia, which donated the asphalt to the Embassy. Following the ceremony, a traditional merienda of Palabok, Toron and Puto was served.  END
