AMBASSADOR RABAGO INSTRUMENTAL IN THE FREEDOM OF A FILIPINO SEAFARER FROM THE DHAKA CENTRAL PRISON

28 March 2008—Just nine (9) days after Philippine Ambassador to Dhaka Zenaida Tacorda-Rabago requested Bangladesh President lajuddin Ahmed's intercession, Filipino seafarer Wilfredo M. Rosales walked out a free man from the Dhaka Central Prison after fourteen years of incarceration.

Dhaka jail authorities turned over Rosales to the Philippine Embassy in Bangladesh for repatriation to the Philippines.  On hand to receive Rosales was Consul Alfredo M. Borlongan who will escort him back to Manila.

From her official assumption as Ambassador of the Philippines to Bangladesh on 09 March, Ambassador Rabago appealed with the President of Bangladesh, H.E. Iajuddin Ahmed the immediate release of Mr. Rosales and thereafter followed it up in all her talks with Bangladesh Foreign Ministry officials.

Wilfredo Rosales was arrested in the Bangladesh southern port city of Chittagong in 1993 on charges of gold smuggling and convicted in 1997. The Embassy provided him with a lawyer but the Bangladesh High Court sustained the 14-year sentence given to Rosales by the lower court.

Mr. Rosales is scheduled to leave Dhaka for the Philippines on 29 March. END
