INVITATION FOR 2009 ALFRED FRIENDLY PRESS FELLOWSHIPS

 

26 June 2008—The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships, based in Washington DC, USA, is inviting print and online journalists for the 2009 Alfred Friendly and Daniel Pearl Fellowships (AFPF).

 

Since 1984, AFPF has provided training opportunities to 258 journalists from 78 developing countries. In the United States, the Fellow is able to learn the practices, standards, and values of US journalism which they can share and apply in their own countries.

 

Applicants for the fellowships must meet the following minimum criteria of eligibility:

 

  • Current full-time employment as a journalist for the news or editorial departments of independent newspapers, wire services, online publications, or magazines of general public interest in a developing country;

  • At least three years of full-time professional experience as a journalist in the print/online media;

  • Citizen of a developing country;

  • Early to mid-career status and between 25 and 35 years old;

  • A demonstrated personal commitment to a career in journalism in a developing country;

  • Desire to share experiences garnered from the fellowship with other journalists in journalist's home country;

  • Endorsement from management of home publication office;

  • Excellent command of both written and spoken English

 

Successful candidates will be reporting for American news organizations from March-August 2009.

 

Deadline for applications is 01 August 2008.
